Health services offering free STD screenings

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WTOC) — Georgia ranks seventh in the nation for chlamydia cases and ranks in the top 20 for other STDs, according to a 2019 study by the Georgia Department of Health.

April being STD Awareness Month, the Coastal Health District is offering free STD screenings throughout the next month.

According to Kavian Harris, a male outreach specialist, half of all new STD cases are among young people between the ages of 15 and 24.

“We were just stuck in the house, which actually led to a huge increase in STIs among people. SO, it’s really great that we’re encouraging people to get tested more than ever, because the fact is that not everyone has symptoms of STIs. You may be asymptomatic or just think it’s a common cold-like condition.

If left untreated, STDs like chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to HIV. As they offer multiple dates and locations across the coastal empire for a free on-site test, they will also provide a rapid home HIV test.

The Chatham County Health Department is also hosting a walk to continue raising awareness. The Walk to Stop the Spread will take place on April 16 at Forsyth Park.
