Fundraising begins for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease in Nacogdoches

NACOGDOCHES, Texas (KTRE) – Members of the Nacogdoches community gathered on Sunday to embrace an important cause and raise awareness. The desire for a cure for Alzheimer’s disease is driven by people who hope to do what they can to help.

The annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease is two months away, but many teams are starting to raise funds months before the event. Crystal Capps, regional director of the Alzheimer’s Association, said she was excited to bring the event back in person, as last year’s walk was virtual.

“Today’s event is to kick off our walk and bring out our walkers and the people who didn’t participate but want to learn more. They can go out and swim, we have food, we have drinks. And that’s just one way to kick off our march in October, ”Capps said.

Committee member Beth White says her team has already raised $ 300. They hope to continue raising funds to reach their goal of $ 1,000.

“This cause has been close to my heart for a long time. My father was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. So anything we can do to raise awareness and help any kind of research funding to find a cure would be amazing because I think everyday people are being diagnosed with this disease, ”White said.

Corey Marshall felt drawn to the idea of being a member of the committee. She says the cause is near and dear to her heart.

“I am the home health coordinator for home health in Texas. And the majority of our patients have Alzheimer’s disease or some form of dementia, ”Marshall said.

Marshall says his involvement with the Alzheimer’s Association is important.

“It certainly raises awareness. You know because it’s here and it’s not going anywhere until we find a cure, so that’s our goal, ”Marshall said.

Capps said everyone is encouraged to participate in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s Disease on Oct. 23 at Festival Park. Registration is free and Capps said any donation will make a big difference.
