About Primary Syphilis – ZimEye
Syphilis is caused by bacteria known as Treponema pallidum.
This disease can affect all organs of the body. It occurs in two forms – early and late.
Early syphilis includes primary and secondary syphilis.
Late syphilis includes nervous system syphilis, cardiovascular syphilis, and gummy syphilis.
Besides these, syphilis is latent when there are no symptoms or signs of syphilis, but blood tests for syphilis are positive.
Signs and symptoms
-The ulcer can appear anywhere on the genitals.
- In men, the ulcer is often located on the glans penis.
-In women, the ulcer may be located in the vagina on the valve or perineum or perineal skin.
- The inguinal lymph nodes are enlarged.
-A generalized non-itchy rash may appear all over the body. -The rash is mottled and raised.
- There may be sores inside the mouth and generalized enlarged lymph nodes.

- chronic, slow-healing ulcers with scarring.

Primary syphilis ulcers are firm, painless sores and can appear anywhere on the body.
Ulcers can heal without treatment. Usually there are also enlarged inguinal lymph nodes.
The rash of secondary syphilis is a generalized maculopapular rash without pruritus.
There is usually generalized lymphadenopathy and there may be sores in the mouth. All systems can be affected in secondary syphilis.
